Alexander Hamilton helped broker a compromise in which the federal government would assume responsibility for the debt incurred during the War for Independence, in exchange for support from northern states for locating the capital along the Potomac River.

SealThe U.S. has 50 states, five territories and the District of Columbia, home of the federal government. In 1790 when there were only 13 stars on the flag, it had 1,000 employees. It reached a peak of 2,800,000 in 1979 and currently has 2,150,000 on staff. It is projected to have a total budget of $3.8 trillion in 2011.
